Laser engraved slate coasters.
Contains 4 coasters, each with its own design of leaves.
֎ Finish
A high quality wet look sealer is applied after being engraved giving the coasters a subtle shine that improves color contrast while maintaining the natural look of the coasters.
Each coaster has 3 protectives pads underneath to protect your furniture.
֎ Are they dishwasher safe?
Short answer: no, I can’t guarantee they are dishwasher safe.
Long answer: I have a rule of thumb in life that, when it comes to kitchenware, if it doesn’t go in the dishwasher, I don’t buy it. So I tried a lot of different finishes for my coasters. And I put them in the dishwasher with every load I had, daily, for at least a week. Almost everything that was as spray application flaked after a few washes: unacceptable. (Which is too bad because it would have saved me a lot of time doing the application!)
Then, I tried various rub-on sealers. A lot of them didn’t give me the contrast I was looking for, but fared a lot better through the dishwasher test. Mainly fading to the natural stone instead of flaking.
Finally I settled on a high end wet-look sealer which has shown to be more reliable than the any of the sprays, and has a good balance of giving the engraving a good contrast while keeping the slate look natural.
With that being said, underneath the coasters are foam pads which are glued in place. So ultimately, while this has not happened in my tests, at one point or another, any dishwasher will eventually unglue the pads. But hey, most people would tell you coasters simply don’t go in the dishwasher; maybe listen to them …or not. I won’t judge you.
֎ How resistant are they
It’s a piece of stone, etched by a laser. While they are not IPX certified, they won’t fear a reasonable amount of heat or water… because it’s a stone product.
I once showed them to a friend in a university classroom, he asked how resistant they were. I said I didn’t know and immediately dropped one onto the hard floor schools uses. I’ve learn that they are way louder than you’d expect when you drop them, which took a few people by surprise. A single flake came of the edge, but it wasn’t otherwise broken.
I’d expect them to be fairly resistant against drop of softer materials (ie.: wood), and prone to break if dropped on very hard materials (ie: porcelain tiles).
In any case, while their resistance has yet to be clearly defined, their durability are certainly hard to match.
֎ Dimensions
Note that due to the nature of the material (slate), the texture, edge patterns and overall dimensions will vary slightly. That being said, they are approximately 10cm in diameter.
֎ Can they be personalized?
Sure! I can engrave anything considered to be a monotone design (ie.: a single color). Contact me before ordering and we can work on a design that suits your needs! (design fee may apply)
